Highlights of Glenfawn Baptist Church:
In 1914, the church called Rev. J.L. Wortham as pastor. The Lord moved in a mighty way under this man of God. This was a note in the Baptist Progress of March 6, 1919:
“I landed in Glenfawn Community Jan. 25, with my family and part of my household belongings. Sunday evening following, the noble and good people of Glenfawn began to drive up with wagons and buggies and they began to carry into my home flour, sugar, coffee, rice, fruits and the Lord knows what all. The young people began to play over the yard and the older ones were talking and seemed to be enjoying themselves, and I sure hope they did. And this scribe and wife were taking in the situation with hearts full of joy. We tried to thank them the best we could, and then read the 14th chapter of John and we had prayer. My wife thinks they are the greatest people in the world and says she wished we had moved here long ago. May God bless the people of Glenfawn. Brethren, pray for us that we may have a great years work with these people and that many be led to Christ.”
Before pastor Wortham left, during a revival in 1920, twenty-five converts were baptized and the church received 16 members by letter. The total membership grew to 172 while brother Wortham was pastor, the largest membership the church has ever had.
Brother Louis Franklin Asher, minister and professor, was called to pastor Glenfawn in January, 1977 until his death, November 5, 1996. Dr. Asher was pastor when the original history was printed. His accomplishments at Glenfawn Baptist Church were many. His pastorate was much longer than any previous pastor. During his years at Glenfawn many were saved and baptized. In the summer of 1987 Sunday School rooms and restrooms were renovated. During this construction, a baptistry was added. On March 1, 1992 plans were begun to construct a fellowship hall. These plans were carried through to completion and this same fellowship hall has been much used over the past several years for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, baby showers and church functions.
On April 6, 1997, under the pastorate of Brother David Willis, the Louis F. Asher Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Louis Franklin Asher. The scholarship is awarded each Spring semester to a qualified student enrolled at the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary.
The current pastor, Bro. Calvin Summers was called to pastor Glenfawn on November 12, 2023 after being on pulpit supply once a month for over a year and then twice a month before being called as Pastor of Glenfawn. He and his wife, Amy Summers, can attest to Rev. J.L. Wortham’s and his wife’s sentiment in 1914 that the people of Glenfawn are some of the greatest, most giving people! Although the church had dwindled down to a handful of members, they determined in their heart that Glenfawn would continue as a light in the small community.
